School Lunches – January

19 Jan

I haven’t posted a school lunch post in a bit, but I assure you I haven’t taken a break from packing lunches.  I just don’t always take a picture since I  don’t have time because I am running late yet again .  Here is a week worth of lunches from January:

Day 1

sunflower seeds + cheese stick, frozen corn + peas, canned pears + frozen peaches, avocado half + triscuits

Day 2

Broccoli + mushrooms + carrots, frozen peaches, strawberry yogurt, pita + cheese

Day 3

grapes + banana, mushrooms + chickpeas, broccoli + carrots + snap peas, cheese pita + fruit twist

Day 4

clementines, carrots, pumpkin bread, PB+J

Day 5

pancakes + syrup, carrots, canned pears, boiled egg (sans yolk per her request) + bananas (doesn’t everyone eat carrots with their pancakes???)

School Lunches – Preschool Edition

My little guy (age 3) goes to preschool two days a week.  He isn’t as into food variety as his big sister, so his lunches tend to look the same most days.  Here is a sampling of 5 of his lunches.

tortilla + cheese, berries, cucumbers

celery+broccoli, chickpeas, tortilla + cheese, watermelon, water

tortillas + cheese, celery, chickpeas, grapes*

broccoli, cheese + tortilla (can you tell that his dad made them on this day?  which of these tortilla roll-ups is not like the other?), celery + peppers + raspberries (= most random combination ever)

chickpeas+leftover pasta, broccoli, apple, cheese + tortilla

*someday, when he is angry and telling me that I don’t do anything for him, I’ll remind him that I used to painstakingly cut up his grapes.

What I Ate Wednesday – The Where’s the Vegetables (and my motivation)? Edition

15 Nov

My day in food, documented for Jenn’s What I Ate Wednesday blog party at her Peas and Crayons Blog.

1. Enter kitchen and pack lunches.

cheese + tortilla, grapes+raspberries+pineapple, red peppers+carrots, triscuits+halloween candy

cheese + tortilla, broccoli + carrots, pineapples + grapes

2. Drop daughter off at school.  Come back home and clean up the kitchen.

3. Time to take the little guy to his 2 day/week preschool.  Make a drink for the road:

teeccino + coconut milk creamer

Is it just me, or do drinks in your favorite mug just taste better?

4. Finally eat breakfast at 9:30am (after being up since a little boy with nightmares about cats (!?!) came into my bed at 5:30):

Toast+butter+spiced apple pear butter, fruit

5.  Decide to postpone the not-so-critical errands I had planned to run and plop on the couch to catch up on 3(!) hours worth of DVR shows : 2 episodes of Good Wife and 1 episode of Revenge.  Bliss!

6. Not too hungry (probably because sitting on the couch for 3 hours doesn’t exactly require much energy), so make a small lunch:

Before:

Frozen Banana + Cultured coconut Milk + 2 Halloween Oreos

After:

7. Drag my lazy bum off the couch (oops, forgot to fold laundry) and grab a quick snack to take while I go pick up my munchkins.

Apple + Phix Energy Drink (in a kombucha bottle)

Phix Review and Giveaway coming soon!

8.  Come home with my kiddos and resume mothering and regular life.  Look at the couch wistfully a few times, remembering the sweet alone time we shared earlier.

9. Umm, it’s been a day of food and nary a vegetable has crossed my lips.  Ooops.

Dinner:

Black Bean and Quinoa Burgers + lettuce + avocado, Alexia Frozen Fries, Fruit

Hello green things.  Welcome to my belly.

10.  Still hungry after one burger.  Round two of dinner:

Black Bean and Quinoa Burger atop a tostado shell.

11. Put the kids to bed.  While talking with my daughter, she made this statement: ‘I’ve been thinking and I think God and Santa must work together.  Like, God watches you and then he tells Santa if you are good or bad.”  How is that for marrying the religious and secular portions of the holiday together?  I’ll have to scan my Bible for God Talking To Santa references.

12.  Catch up on filing that I was, oh, at least 9 months behind on.  Oops.

13. Still haven’t folded that laundry.  Ooops.

14. Make goals for tomorrow: 1. Eat more vegetables, 2. Fold Laundry, 3. Think of more goals.

School Lunches – September

Thanks for the feedback on my last school lunch post.  It looks like everyone, at least those who commented and voted in the poll, want to see more school lunchbox posts.  It’s a bit ironic that I’m posting this today, as today my daughter is buying her lunch.  :)  She buys a couple of days a week and brings her lunch from home 3 days a week.

As a side note – I can’t really think of a good title for this series.  Anyone got any ideas?

Here are another 5 days of school lunches:

plums + raspberries, peas & carrots (I call this the Forest Gump combo), yogurt, sunflower seeds, triscuits

(I put in frozen peas, still frozen, and they are cold at lunchtime.  Sounds odd to me, but she loves them)

Pear, fruit snacks, cherry tomatoes, sunflower seeds, cheese + tortilla

grapes + cantaloupe with applesauce, tomatoes + red peppers, leftover birthday cake, cheese + tortilla

Guess what was eaten first?  Hint – it wasn’t the cheese tortilla.

grapes + cantaloupe, celery + tomatoes, cereal, sunflower seeds, cheese + tortilla

strawberries+cantaloupe+grapes, Forest Gump  combo, yogurt, pistachios, cheese + tortilla

Anyone craving birthday cake now?  I am.

ps – Day 5 on the Cleanseand I’m still trucking.  I’ll post about it again soon.

pps – Go enter the jewelry giveaway!!

School Lunches – Checking Back In

12 Sep

This is the forth week of school for our family and dare I say we are getting into a groove?  With that said, tomorrow something is bound to go wrong.

My daughter has learned about Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber and snack packs of Oreos.  We are so proud.

She is actually doing quite well and thoroughly enjoying school.  I still get a little emotional as I watch her walk into school each morning, her little purple puppy backpack bouncing on her back and her Sketcher Twinkle Toe shoes lighting up the entire front walkway.

I’ve written about school lunch containers here and here.  We decided on the Laptop Lunch system and it’s working well for us.  She takes her lunch 3 days a week and buys her lunch 2 days a week.  We look at the school menu in advance and plan out which days she will buy.  In all honesty, she’d probably be happy buying her lunch each day, but I’m not ready for that.  I still like to have a little control over what goes into her growing body, so the 3-2 plan is our best compromise for now.

Here are 5 days worth of lunches from my little lively kitchen:

cheese + tortilla, fruit + vanilla yogurt, carrots + peppers, almonds + pistachios

cheese + tortilla, triscuits, fruit + vanilla yogurt, peppers, applesauce

cheese + tortilla, cashews + pistachios, broccoli + peppers, rice krispie treat, watermelon

cheese, sunflower seeds + cashews, grapes + vanilla yogurt, carrots + peppers, leftover orzo + macaroni

fruit kabobs, pita chips, vanilla yogurt (for the fruit, but I think she dipped the pita chips in too….), cashews + pistachios, celery + carrots + peppers

Some sites with good lunch box filling ideas:

Laptop Lunches Site - this site has a plethora of options.

And… trying something new…
