What I Ate While Reading Wednesday

29 Feb

The laundry?  Still sitting (clean) in the basket wating to be folded.

The pile of things at the bottom of the stairs waiting to be carried up?  Still waiting.

The sunflower seed butter and hummus I said I’d make for snacks this week?  Not remotely made.

My Google reader feed?  Unread.

Why?

These books:

I never thought I’d find a book about teenagers being forced to fight to the death so captivating, but these books are GOOD.  I read The Hunger Games (book 1) over the weekend and started Catching Fire (book 2) Monday night. I spent most of Tuesday trying to find spare minutes to read, in between taking pictures of my food and, oh yeah, mothering.  At least the family made the top three, right?

Breakfast was a cup of tea while taking my girl to school and then a glass of juice before taking my little guy to preschool.  While reading a few pages.

juice: romaine + celery + apple + lemon + beets

I did pull myself away long enough to pack the little guy’s lunch (and even made time to cut off half the crusts):

PB+J, cheese puffs, cucumber, apple

I went to the gym and left the book at home, as trying to read while running is recipe for instant disaster for me.  Listening to music takes enough coordination – I yank my headphones out on accident half the time.  After showering, I ate a Zing bar in the car on the way to the store.

I stopped into Starbucks, as our free drink coupon was about to expire and there was no way I was going to let that coupon go unused.  I coupled it with a $2 off a Bistro Box coupon for a very good deal.

For a grand total of $3.11, I got a trente Iced Coffee (which I drank half of and saved the rest for the next day) and a Protein Bistro Box.  I added a few extra veggies at home and sat down to read for the 45 minutes I had before picking up the munchkins from school.

Once we got back home, I first finished my iced coffee while simultaneously supervising the kids climbing a tree and reading.

We then took a snack break and the kids did some homework/workbooks while I drank a kombucha and read some more.

Kids are eating granola bars, apples, tortillas and they split another PB&J.  They are really hungry after school.  :)

We finally came in for dinner prep and I put the book aside.  Oh the sacrifices I make….

Dinner was a Vegetable Plate type of assortment.

Brown Rice, Asian Sesame Glazed Brussels Sprouts, Carrots + Celery, Steamed Broccoli, Cherry Tomatoes + Mangoes + Broccoli Slaw

We put the kids to bed and I curled up with a cup of tea to read.

I finished the book and think I’ll wait a few days before starting book 3.  That laundry isn’t going to fold itself…

lol. that’s three posts so far mentioning the hunger games, including mine :)
    Great book!
I love that it features in half of your photos too

I’m caught up in the series at the moment myself. Finished Catching Fire over the weekend and I’m 2/3 through Mockingjay. I resisted it myself for a long time. I’ve borrowed all the books from a friend, but I really think I need to find myself a set, I liked them that much. I can read on the treadmill ( I walk, not run) so I do that at the gym sometimes. At home, it the stationary bike for me, Because I can read at the same time!

      I resisted too. I didn’t now what I was missing! :)

The stationary bike is great to reading/exercising. Still, I have trouble reading much more than a magazine, as my attention span is shorter when I’m trying to work out too. Plus, I don’t like sweating into my books. :)

sounds like a little bit of heaven. Sometimes rules and schedules are made to be broken.

    • Michelle {The Lively Kitchen} February 29, 2012 at 1:15 pm #

Preach it sister. And read the books! I’ve already committed to loaning out my copies to a friend when I finish, but when she brings them back, I’ll happily pass them onto you.

I definitely need to get my hands on those books! [If only I didn't have a stack from the library I need to read already...]

I love your dinner/veggie plates…and I want those lap trays your kids have. :)

They’d be great pool reads – plus I’m thinking they will come out with a mass market paperback with the movie in March, so they’ll be even cheaper. I ended up asking for them for Christmas since the request list at the library was so long.

My sister in law first introduced me to the books a couple of years ago when she read them with her 6th grade class. I’d love to hear a class discussion over the book, as there are so many themes that are ripe for analysis. There is a little romance and love triangle action, but nothing as over the top as the Twilight series.

good idea waiting a couple days to start book 3 – that series really is all-consuming once you get into it!

Stopping by from Jen’s site. Loved this post. Sounds exactly like my last two weeks. Start book three! ;)

I know! It’s just hard to not start Mockingjay when it’s sitting on my dresser practically screaming for me….

Those books really are addicting! I’m almost through the third one now, and it’s hard to put it down. Dinner looks great! Want to come cook for me?

I love all the great new healthy food choices Starbucks is coming out with! I haven’t had that box yet, but I have tried a few others and have loved them all!

    • Michelle {The Lively Kitchen} February 29, 2012 at 1:10 pm #

I always eye the bistro boxes, but tend to be too cheap to purchase. With the $2 off coupon, it made it $2.99, which is a pretty good deal. There is a vegan peanut noodles box that looks really good too.

  8. Tiff February 29, 2012 at 11:58 am #

That’s a good lookin’ bistro box. I’m glad you’re enjoying the books. I haven’t read the last one yet, but I’m looking forward to it.

I haven’t read them yet, but I read a really intriguing review of them and am curious to check them out. Such a cute pic of your kids outside with their snack!

I am not usually into the sci-fi/fantasy genre, but these books are great. Just be prepared to neglect all other duties while reading. :)

So, which of the two books did you like better? I need a big chunk of time to really get into the third one–reading a few pages a night before I fall asleep with the book on my face is just making it really hard to get into…
We had roasted brussels sprouts for dinner last night too! Even Jace ate them, which was a first.
Excuse my ignorance, but what is a ‘trente’ size? I thought venti was the biggest, but is that one bigger? Shows you how often I go to Starbucks.

Egyptian Licorice Mint! That tea is one of my favorites, and I’ve hooked my boyfriend on it, too.

Nothing like a great book to distract from time to time! ;)

  12. Deirdre February 29, 2012 at 7:21 pm #

I love how clean all your food is…I’m doing a cleanse and it is so inspiring to see that kind of food, instead of the usual gooey, creamy and crispy fare so common on food blogs (only because the temptation can be so great.)

I’m halfway through Mockingjay…and that is where I shall be returning shortly.

  13. Katie February 29, 2012 at 10:05 pm #

I am loving that there are so many people reading these books now! I read them all as they came out, so I’m an “old” fan. No one listened to me back then….

How do you like the tea?!?

    • Michelle {The Lively Kitchen} March 1, 2012 at 1:30 pm #

I thought of you when I wrote this post – both the tea and the books. I remember you reading the books and blogging about it, but I somehow didn’t catch on that they’d be so addictive. What other books am I missing? Maybe your top 3?

I love the tea. It’s Aveda tea and 1/3 of the price.

I’m currently number 24 on the wait list for the first book at our library…and that stinks, because the other 2 are already ready for me to pick up! It’s a little over $5 on amazon (with free 2 day shipping, thank you amazon prime free trial) so I think I’m going to cave and buy my first non-school book in…years!

Anyway, the ironic thing is I was coming here to tell you about this book I’m reading with some recipes I think you’d like! It’s called The Vagan Girl’s Guide to Life by Melisser Elliott. It is kind of pushy and such but the recipes are great! I’m trying cornmeal-crust shitake mushroomand corn quiche next week!

    • Michelle {The Lively Kitchen} March 1, 2012 at 1:32 pm #

I say to buy it. You can’t beat $5 and you can easily pass it along to a friend when you are finished. It’s a great escape read.

I have read that Vegan Girls book. I need to re-check it out from the library and read it again. Thanks for the reminder. I actually didn’t copy any recipes down at the time. Let me know how you like the quiche.

      • EmFox March 1, 2012 at 5:21 pm #

Did I really type Vagan…pagan/vegan mix? LOL Anyway, I’ll let you know how the quiche is.

I actually found a copy of the first book on CL last night and am about to go pick it up, here’s hoping they actually show. CL is full of flakes around here!

I love how Catching Fire made it’s way into most of the pictures. ;) I’m reading that one right now too. SO. GOOD!

  16. Jen@FoodFamilyFitness March 1, 2012 at 4:53 pm #

I’ve been resisting for too long, I need these books in my life!!!!

What a great day of eating and reading! I love a good book and it’s so hard to put one down. Is it crazy that I haven’t heard of these books!? I do like the teenage Twightlight series and Harry Potter’s!? Does that count?
I love the picture of the kids outside doing homework and eating their snack. Too cute!
